BEST FILMS OF 2008

#10. Return to Sleepaway Camp - Stands out as one of the best horror/unintentional comedy's of the past decade. Universally panned, people just don't understand it.

#9. The Dark Knight - Highly overrated, but decent Batman flick. Heath Ledger would have been more suited to portraying an escaped lunatic rather than the Joker.

#8. Burn After Reading - This film grows on you like a tumor. Fairly unique comedy in an age of familiarity.

#7. Slumdog Millionaire - Best Picture winner for 2008. No, it didn't deserve that acclaim, but it's still worth seeing. Some of it is pretty brutal and opens the Western eye to life in the world's most populated democracy.

#6. Role Models - In a decade of obscene, downright lousy and forgettable comedy flicks, this one stands out like Israel on a map of the Middle East. For the first time since American Pie, Sean William Scott is funny.

#5. Revolutionary Road - Downright depressing, but the art direction and costume design are to die for. And it's great to see these two in a film together again.

#4. Frost/Nixon - Whether you Love or hate Nixon, the film is entertaining. Not too many movies like this anymore, though I do have a slight problem with the way Nixon is portrayed.

#3. W - Another film about a President, this was the first film about a current (upon release) commander and chief. I can take some issue with how W is portrayed but overall it is fair. Underrated and a box office flop, it deserved more.

#2. Gran Torino - Eastwood's greatest. Not that he had too much competition.

#1. The Wrestler - This has been semi-remade into Black Swan. But this is much superior. Enjoy it now.

TOP 10 BORIS KARLOFF FILMS

Boris Karloff has been in many films. Many are quite amazing, others less so. Attempting to compile a list of Karloff's worst movies is like sorting through elephant diarrhea and looking for the softest and smelly piece. So it was a lot easier to pick out Karloff's best films.

#10. THE INVISIBLE RAY (1937) - Could have been worse. A mediocre story that holds up.

#9. ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET DR. JEKYLL AND MR HYDE (1953) - Probably my favourite A&C comedy film. Karloff plays the not-so-good doctor.

#8. THE MUMMY (1932) - Usually overrated, this interesting occult film is still a classic.

#7. SON OF FRANKENSTEIN (1939) - Something does not sit right with this entry. Still worth the watch.

#6. TOWER OF LONDON (1939) - Historical costume drama also feature Vinny Price in an early role. Holds you till the end.

#5. THE RAVEN (1935) - This film is partially responsible for the ratings code.

#4. HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1944) - The perfect monster mash film.

#3. THE BLACK CAT (1934) - Early Occult film very touchy for 30's.

#2. FRANKENSTEIN (1931) - We all know why this is here.

#1. BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) - Always a treat, more so on or near Halloween.

TEN WORST FILMS OF 2009

2009 was a very poor year for movies. Far worse than 2008 or even 2010. Here we take a look at the ten worst films from that year.

#10. LEAP YEAR - The opening credits promise John Lithgow as a costar, failing to mention his appearance is only a cameo! Not a horrid film and not nearly as bad as #9 and below.

#9. TERMINATOR SALVATION - A CGI Arnold. Can't believe how much this sucked. Never holds you in it. Now that Arnie is no longer the governator, maybe he can come back for Terminator 5.

#8. NEW MOON - Do I even need to explain this entry? Emo Vampire and Shirtless Wolfman contend for the affection of a young girl.

#7. AVATAR - I can write ESSAYS upon ESSAYS on why I hate this film. Tough to consider there are six worse that I've seen.

#6. DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGANS? - Includes every cliche they could possibly think of. The bear scene comes to mind.

#5. 2012 - Hard to believe this isn't the worst film of the year. Essentially a montage of computer effects and John Cusack running from them.

#4. HALLOWEEN 2 - One of the worst remakes. Myers mom's ghost appears.

#3. DANCE FLICK - Only watched this in order to include it on this list. A much worse effort than EPIC MOVIE or DISASTER MOVIE.

#2. HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT - Fucking horrible. ALMOST as bad as the Haunting or House on Haunted Hill remakes.

#1. MEGA SHARK VS GIANT OCTOPUS - Please see title. A serious player for worst movie of all time.

TOP 10 MOVIES OF 2010

2010 seemed to start out pretty bad for films, but towards the end the year got much better. Here are the ten best films of 2010:

#10. YOUTH IN REVOLT - A weird, and I stress the word weird - comedy. Ray Liotta and Steve Buscemi each have one particular line that are both delivered so well that it makes the movie hilarious. I've never seen anything quite like this.

#9. THE CRAZIES - Here we do have a remake that delivers. I haven't seen the original, but this film manages to be disturbing and tense. Shameless sequel-opened ending though.

#8. TRUE GRIT - A disappointment. But hey, it's still good and has some fine moments. Keep in mind I was expecting something that would compete for a spot on the infamous TOP 100. Did you know it's a remake?

#7. KICKASS - I would have loved this movie - if I was 10. It's still good, has a more original concept, intelligent humour. The only thing that gets me with this one is Hit Girl. I am asked to suspend my disbelief but her annoying and impossible character ruins it. But on the plus side - Nicolas Cage shows he can still take part in a good film.

#6. THE RUNAWAYS - Micheal Shannon's performance as the greedy manager of the titular group is uncanny. The story focuses a little too heavily on Dakota Fanning and the conclusion leaves us unsatisfied. Still, it's a fun ride there.

#5. SHUTTER ISLAND - Moments of brilliant and rich atmosphere and a good musical score are affected only by an unconvincing ending. Technically, somewhat of a disappointment but it's still pretty good. Should (and easily could) have been better.

#4. BLACK SWAN - It's very decent, seperable from all below it while not quite as good as the top three. Certainly nothing to rave about yet I feel the Oscars will treat it VERY kindly. It's essentially a female version of THE WRESTLER. One of those films that sits with you afterward....

#3. THE SOCIAL NETWORK - My first thoughts towards a "Facebook" movie were quite prejudice. This film is quite above average and I can see myself watching this once a year until I croak. Above all else it is a realistic film, not just based on the fact that it's a true story. Eisenberg's best film yet. Timberlake fits right in, surprisingly....

#2. THE FIGHTER - It was ten minutes into this movie that I realized Christian Bale was himself. He gives the best performance of his career. Good soundtrack, well chosen songs but most of all, a fine study of what it's like being pulled in all sorts of different directions from different people.

#1. INCEPTION - It's so rare nowadays for such a film to be so carefully constructed and yet succeed in so many other areas. INCEPTION is one of these rare films. Now there is the concept which may turn some off: Dreams. I myself predicted this to be an above average but not a great film. It is, if one can accept the concept. I'm going to use the M word: Masterpiece. The trailer makes it look as though it's an action movie. Well I can tell you the action sequences are the least important part of this film. There is extreme attention to detail, great performances from all around and the soundtrack, wow. I can truly say it delivers one of the best original scores of all time, better than even AMERICAN BEAUTY and those close to me know well my opinion regarding that film. I am listening to the soundtrack on Youtube as I write this and it only makes me want to see it again. Nolan spent ten years preparing this film and it shows. No other film of 2010 can touch this one with a 50-foot pole. There are aspects of the film that would be considered cliche in other films, but so strong are the performances and the story itself that it rises above all this. I honestly could not have forseen how amazing this film actually is and it seems even greater with each passing minute. Not in a few years has a film had such impact. Another great positive note - The CGI is kept to a minimum. I'd better stop before this becomes an essay and I accidentally hand it in at school. So I'll close with this: My faith in the future of film art has greatly increased. Do yourself a favour: See this movie.
